William Thomas Wood ROI VPRWS (1877-1958) was born in Ipswich. He studied art at the Regent Street Polytechnic and in Italy. Wood was a landscape and flower painter in oil and watercolour and was an official war artist in the Balkans during the First World War and, largely as a result of his war experience, author A. J. Mann hired Wood in 1920 to illustrate 'The Salonika Front'. Noted for his atmospheric landscapes of Sussex, he was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1913, a full member in 1918, and subsequently served as vice-president from 1923-1926. He was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and of the National Society of Painters and Sculptors. He exhibited more than 55 works at the Royal Academy from 1900-1947 and was a prolific exhibitor elsewhere, including at Chenil and Goupil Galleries and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, in addition to having a series of solo shows at Leicester Galleries. He signed his watercolours 'William T. Wood' and flowers 'Wood'. paintings by Wood are in the collections of the Imperial War Museum, London, and the Government Art Collection.
