Artist Biography

William Russell Flint was a painter and illustrator born in Edinburgh, Scotland the son of Francis Wighton Flint (1851-1902), designer and watercolourist. Russell was apprenticed as a lithograph artist and designer with a firm of printers, he also attended evening classes at the Royal Institution School of Art. In 1900 Flint relocated to London and was employed as a medical illustrator and by 1903 was appointed to the staff of the Illustrated London News simultaneously attending evening classes at Heatherley's. He also carried out colour illustration work for the Medici Society and late in his career for the Golden Cockerel Press. Flint exhibited regularly at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, RA, ISSPG, and occasionally at the Lake Artists Society and later at the NS. He was elected an Associate of the RA in 1924, and a full member in 1933. Flint who was a member of the Art Workers' Guild also exhibited with W. F. Crittall’s Sole Bay Group in the early 1930's.


Flint was an elected member of the RWS and during the period 1936-56 held the post of President. During World War II he was commissioned by the Pilgrim Trust for their Recording Britain series. Flint was known largely for his work in watercolour and also won fame for his gypsies, flamenco dancers and dreamy nude paintings. He was elected ROI in 1912 and like his brother R. Purves Flint, RSW in 1913. In 1947 William Russell Flint was knighted and in 1962 his work was acknowledged by a retrospective exhibition in the Diploma Gallery of the Royal Academy. Arguably Flint was the twentieth century's most prolific artist/exhibitor and examples of his work are in the collection of Museums Sheffield, Newport Art Gallery, Gwent, McLean Museum and Art Gallery, Greenock, Whitby Art Gallery and many other UK art galleries and museums. He was knighted in 1947.
