William Paton Burton (1828-1883) - Watercolour On the River at Beeding, Sussex

Description

A peaceful landscape on the River Adur near Upper Beeding in West Sussex. Presented in a double wash line mount and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Signed to the lower-left edge. The name and dates of the artist are also printed at the lower edge of the mount. Title inscribed verso. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is some mild discolouration. There are some small chips and scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

William Paton Burton (1828-1883) was an architect, painter, and watercolourist. He was born in Madras, India. Burton first studied with David Bryce in Edinburgh. After a period spent studying architecture, he dedicated himself to painting in watercolours. He travelled extensively, particularly in Egypt and Europe. His works include views of Holland and Egypt and French and English Landscapes. Works by Burton are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum and Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery.
