William Minshall Birchall (1884-1941) was a marine painter born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA. The date that he and his parents arrived in England is not known, however he is recorded on the 1891 census as living in Deptford, London. So any art education he received was in England, but as yet this information is lacking. He worked mainly in watercolours and c.1914 he was living in Liscard, Cheshire, where he showed locally at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Birchall is represented in the Peabody Museum, Salem and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. His death was recorded in Hastings, Sussex, where for some years he had worked as a part-time insurance agent.
