Description

An atmospheric Victorian watercolour with beautiful light, showing a logging horse and cart being led home, with a shepherd and his flock close behind. The fading sunlight adds a softness to the earthy landscape. The artist has signed to the lower right corner and the painting has been presented in a fine early 20th Century gilt frame with swept corners and rail with foliate corners and finished with a gold mount that has been inscribed with the title and artist's name. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some areas of loss and restoration to the frame.

Artist Biography

William Manners (1860-1930) was a Yorkshire artist, born in Bradford, who painted almost entirely in watercolours and gouache. He lived in Otley before moving to The Lake District, where many of his scenes are painted.
He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1893.
He had 3 works exhibited in the Royal Academy as well as exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Walker Gallery
in Liverpool.
