William Lionel Wyllie (1851–1931) - Late 19thC Etching North Shields Harbour

Description

An intricate and delicately executed drypoint etching by the esteemed maritime paint, William Lionel Wyllie. The scene shows a panoramic view of the harbour at North Shields. A fleet of small rowing boats and sailboats head out to sea after a procession of steam trawlers and a much larger steam powered ship. Gulls wheel overhead and figures can be seen waving from the docks. The artist has signed to the lower left of the plate lines in graphite. The original plate lines are in tact. The etching has been presented in a simple black frame with card mount. There is a framer's label at the reverse. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. In otherwise fine condition.

Artist Biography

W.L.Wyllie was an artist in oil, watercolour, etching and aquatint of marine and tidal Thames subjects. W.L.Wyllie was born in London on 5th July 1851, son of William Morison Wyllie and brother of Charles Wyllie. W.L.Wyllie studied art at the Heatherleys in 1865, and at the Royal Academy Schools between 1866-69, winning the Turner Medal 1869. W.L.Wyllie was the father of Harold Wyllie. W.L.Wyllie lived in Portsmouth for many years from 1907 and died in London on 6th April 1931. Acknowledged as one of the leading marine artists at the turn of the century. Marine paint to the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, Ryde. Work in the National Maritime Museum.
