William Langley (c.1880-1920) - Signed Oil Highland Landscape with Cattle
Description
An impressive later example of listed artist William Langley's highland artworks. A commercially successful artist, Langley is known for his romanticised depictions of the British Isles. The textural application of paint and subtle areas of impasto creates compositional tension adding a depth to the landscape. Langley obviously has a penchant for the dramatic. Even his anthropomorphic depiction of the highland cows provoke an emotive response from the viewer. Overall a visually rich characterisation of the Scottish Highlands. Well presented in a modern gilded frame with woven detail. Signed. On canvas.Condition
There is very light craquelure visible in the white paint to the sky area and places where the varnish has worn. Inspection under UV light shows a tear to the canvas which has been repaired and retouched.
