Description

A finely painted and bucolic watercolour by the artist William Laithwood Appleton, depicting a mountainous scene in the Lake District. The figures add interest to the dominating natural elements of the composition, in the Picturesque manner, with an inscription by the artist reading 'Rd to Grassmere'. Watercolour paintings depicting a rural landscape, such as this, were a highly popular genre during the Victorian Era. Well-presented in a mount and dark wooden frame, as shown. Signed and inscribed. On wove.

In fine condition overall, for the picture of this age. There is some discolouration to the mount, as well as minor marks and scuffing to the frame.
