William Joseph Boyes was a painter, born in Bradford the son of a printer. He was a founder member of the Yorkshire Union of Artists and served on the Council from the beginning until 1909, exhibiting irregularly during this period. Boyes painted predominantly landscape, often local scenes, in a pastoral style popular in the late 19th early 20th centuries. He taught art at the Ilkley College of Art, Bradford Technical College, Batley Grammar School, Thornton Grammar School and the Church Institute, Bradford. In spite of his professional status as an artist, amazingly little is known about him. He seems only to have shown his work with the YUA and at Cartwright Hall Museum, Bradford where his painting ‘Old English Cottage’ was shown in their 1951 Festival of Britain art exhibition. He died on Christmas day in Caistor, Lincolnshire.
