Greaves employs an expressive, painterly style to capture this quaint rural scene. A tall brick chimney and modest farm buildings are nestled among lush green trees beside a placid stream. Signed to the lower right. Presented in a gilt frame with a canvas slip. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration to the varnish and dirtying. Small scuffs and marks to the frame. Foxing to the canvas slip.

Artist Biography

William Greaves was a landscape painter, mainly in oils. He was born in Leeds and studied at Sheffield College of Art. Greaves lost an arm in an accident in his youth and was known as the 'one-armed Yorkshire painter'. His work was almost exclusively of Yorkshire scenes with a few of the Sherwood Forest region. He exhibited his work with the Yorkshire Union of Artists, Royal Academy, and at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
