A fine watercolour study of a game bird and hare in a pantry interior. Signed to the lower right. Presented in a part gilt frame.

Condition

The painting is in excellent condition for its age. There is some wear to the frame leaving it with a rustic finish.

Artist Biography

William Cruikshank (1848-1922) RCA was born in Scotland and was the great-nephew of artist George Cruikshank. He studied art at the Royal Scottish Academy and at the Royal Academy in London alongside John Everett Millais and Frederic Leighton.

In 1871, he moved to Canada and taught at the Central Ontario School of Art. By 1894 he had made a name for himself in Canadian art circles and was elected as a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Some of his paintings still reside in the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
