This extremely evocative work by William Bidwell Henley (1839-1887) typifies the traditional artistic movements of 19th Century Britain. Under the glowing light of the setting sun, a snow-laded riverside cottage is nestled between bare tree branches and grassy undergrown. Evoking the cold life of winter in the countryside, Henley celebrates the natural forms of the landscape, in a rich palette. Well-presented in a washline mount and gilt wooden frame. There is a piece of card inscribed with the title to the reverse, likely from an earlier frame or mount. Signed and incsribed on the reverse. On watercolour paper.
Condition
The condition is good for a picture of this age. Some very light surface discolouration, and there are small areas of bitumen deformation with some small losses, mainly near the lower centre at the tree trunks. The frame is in fine condition, with very light wear.
