Artist Biography

William A. Kermode was a wood engraver, illustrator and linocut artist, born in Hobart, Tasmania. He emigrated to England circa 1911 and studied under Iain MacNab at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in London, 1925-28 and occasionally exhibited at Redfern Gallery, London. During World War I he fought in the British army and was awarded the Military Cross for Gallantry.

Kermode is perhaps better known as a designer of posters, particularly for the Underground Group. In 1924, he designed the poster 'Leave this and Move to Edgware' printed by the Westminster Press a copy of which can be seen in the London Transport Museum. A linocut by Kermode is also in the collection of the V&A. Kermode illustrated Henry Williamson's Patriot's Progress and designed a number of book jackets. His work was also reproduced in the Radio Times, London Mercury, The Evening Standard’ and ‘The Times’. He died in Ashford, Kent in February 1959.
