Wilhelm Ritter (1860-1948) German, oil on canvas. At the village well in a Rhineland village, a horse and carriage beyond. Signed to the lower left. Presented in an elaborate gesso frame with scrolling acanthus and berry mouldings.Condition
Historic craquelure visible across the surface of the oil. Signs of heat treatment and blistering to the upper third of the canvas. Some cracking and wear visible at the frame's mitre joints.

Artist Biography
Son of Lorenz Ritter. Wilhelm was trained by his father and his uncle, Paul. He attended the Nuremberg Arts and Crafts School under the direction of Friedrich Carl Mayer and Carl Jäger. In 1883-84, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, in 1885 at the Art School in Karlsruhe with Gustav Schönleber, and in 1886 attended a study trip with Gustav Schönleber to Italy. He is remembered for historical townscape, genre, and landscape paintings.
