Description

A charming rural scene by German artist Wilhelm Lommen (1838-1895) depicting workhorses pulling a plough. One horse rears its head, startled by a flock of sheep being led by a shepherd along the track. Lommen balances an impressionistic style with meticulous detail and accuracy, particularly in his rendering of the horses, a frequent subject in his work. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame with foliate running patterns. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Slight discolouration to the paint; however, the condition is very good for a picture of this age. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Stable cracking to the corners of the frame.

Artist Biography

Wilhelm Lommen (1838-1895) was a German painter of landscapes and rural life. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, and was a member of the Malkasten Artists' Association and the General German Art Association. His painting 'Expansion of Jülich Road' is in the collection of the Clemens-Sels-Museum in Neuss, and 'Encounter in the Countryside' is held by the Volmer Collection Foundation in Wuppertal.
