Collection Information

Peter Bernard Wilhelm was selected to serve as artist on the expedition to Japan when he was 25 years old - before this he was an artist and illustrator in America. Along with fellow artist Brown, Heine was sent out with exploration parties, where he tracked down and recorded the wildlife, places of interest and people which would be of interest to the expedition. After the Japan expedition, Heine served as an artist for the Prussian Government on the Eulenberg Expedition, which negotiated a treaty between Prussia and Japan. In 1862 Heine worked as a topographical engineer for the First Maryland Infantry and published his drawings in 'Harper's Weekly'. It is thought that his drawings revealed too much military information, and Heine was discharged from the army in December 1862. He published a memoir on the Prussian Expedition in 1864, rejoined the Union Army as Colonel in 1864, and was promoted to Brigadier General in 1865.
