A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. The frame has minor surface wear. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.

Wilhelm Frey (1888-1960) came to art relatively late. After commercial training and several years in Manchester, he returned to Germany and opened an art dealership in Berlin, a venture cut short by the 1923 inflation. He then moved to Königsberg in East Prussia to study painting and graphic art at the local art and trade school. In 1933 Frey settled in Osthavelland, first in Nauen and from 1935 in Brandenburg an der Havel, where he lived and worked until his death. The surrounding landscapes and the area around the Paulikloster monastery became recurring motifs. He documented the city's wartime destruction and reconstruction in numerous drawings and watercolours.
