Waveney Fredrick was a painter born in Luton. In 1928 she was appointed to the staff of Birmingham Public Libraries, working first in the Lending Department and later moving to the Reference Library. During the 1940’s she attended East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing to study under Cedric Morris. After World War II had ended Birmingham Library relocated her to the Shakespeare Library where eventually she became a world authority on the Bard’s publications, programmes, ephemera and theatrical material. Her painting never ceased and in 1950 she formed the Harborne Group known locally to critics as the 'self-styled rebels'. In 1965 she exhibited in the United States, in the Fredericksberg Gallery of Modern Art and the Washington Gallery of Art. Fredericks co-founded the Birmingham Pastel Society with fellow RBSA members Gordon Yapp and Alex Jackson, and their first exhibition was held in 1984. Waveney Fredrick was a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Birmingham Art Circle and the Pastel Society, London.
