Artist born in Islington, London the son of engraver Lumb Stocks, (1812-1892) and the brother of portrait painter Arthur Stocks, (1846-1889) and still-life painter and engraver Bernard Octavius Stocks. Quite the itinerant, he lived in Hampstead, Leamington Spa, Hatfield and Salisbury, travelling widely throughout the British Isles while recording views in Scotland, Staffordshire, Devon, Lancashire and the home counties. His portraiture owed much to the Pre-Raphaelites particularly Dante Gabriel Rossetti and a fine example of this in in the collection of Princetown University Art Museum in America.
