A fine watercolour painting with graphite by W.J. Palmer-Jones on 'Clifford Milburn & Company's' watercolour board. The scene depicts a view of the courtyard of the Palazzo della Ragione in Verona, Italy. Signed and dated to the lower right-hand corner. Location is inscribed on the reverse.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, light foxing and some surface Marks, mainly to the corners. Some creasing and small surface losses to the corners.

Artist Biography

Architect, painter, printmaker and furniture designer born William John Jones who added the name Palmer by deed poll on his marriage in September 1911. Jones was born in Hartford, Huntingdonshire, now part of Cambridgeshire and attended Dulwich College from 1900 to 1904, followed by the Architectural Association School from 1906 to 1908 and then spent time at the Central School of Art and Crafts studying printmaking. During the period 1908-12 he was employed as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York as the Egyptian Expedition's first architect. Palmer-Jones worked at several sites around Egypt, mainly engaged on the task of architectural recording, including the site at Thebes. His other very many projects included houses in London suburbs, the Phipson Memorial at Brookwood Cemetery, Surrey, much design and alteration work in Frensham, Surrey, a bedroom in the Palace of the Arts at the British Empire Exhibition in London 1924-25; a concrete house for the 'Daily Mail' Ideal Home Exhibition in London; reconstruction and decorations at Queen's Small Hall, Langham Place, London, alterations to the 'Everyman' Theatre in Hampstead, London and much more.
Additionally, Palmer-Jones who was a member of the Art Workers' Guild worked as a painter, illustrator, lithographer, poster designer and furniture designer and exhibited at the RA and Walker Art Gallery. the Studio Yearbook of Decorative Art during the period 1920-31 reproduced many photographs of his oeuvre and his work as an interior designer is reproduced in the book detailed below. During World War I he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and Royal Naval Air Service and was elected a Fellow of the RIBA.
