Artist Biography
W. Douglas Macleod (1892-1963) was a painter, printmaker and cartoonist who was born at Clarkston, Renfrewshire. He started work as a bank clerk 1906-15 and following active service with the Royal Artillery in World War I, he attended Glasgow School of Art, (1919-1923). During the 1920’s he worked on the Glasgow Evening News as a cartoonist until 1930. He showed at the RSA, RGI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, FAS and Paris Salon. Mainly remembered for his etchings of Southern Europe and North Africa, he also designed posters for British Rail. Glasgow Art Gallery, McLean Museum and Art Gallery in Greenock and Perth Museum and Art Gallery hold examples of his work.
