This accomplished Victorian watercolour study depicts two dead Finches in undergrowth. The artist captures their delicate bodies and vibrant colours in fine detail. Deceased birds were a common motif in Victorian still life art, a gentle nod towards the fleeting beauty of life, sympathy for the less fortunate and even sometimes thought to bring luck to people who received these paintings.
