Description

A scene on the Rue de Groeninge by Notre Dame, Bruges, of two women talking across a threshold by the World War I artist William Cecil Dunford. Presented glazed in a washline mount and a textured gilt-effect frame. Signed and inscribed with the location to the lower-left edge. The title and artist's name are also inscribed to the lower edge of the mount. Artist's label to the reverse. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is some minor foxing and discolouration. Some small scuffs to the frame, primarily to the left side. Overall in very good condition.

Artist Biography

William Cecil Dunford RDS FRSA (1885-1969) was a World War I artist born in Bromley, Kent. He was educated at Alleyn's School, Dulwich, and Culham Diocesan Teacher Training College before becoming attached to the Historical Records Department with the Australian Forces and the YMCA. He became a war artist when based at Bailleul and Ypres. Many of his drawings are of men at rest, in canteens, on the roads, outside their tents, and attending concerts. Several of his works are in the Memorial War Museum, Canberra, Australia. A number were held by the YMCA Headquarters in London but were destroyed when the building was bombed in 1940. Many of his sketches from the Front were reproduced in Australian, New Zealand, and American magazines. A watercolour of Queen Mary's YMCA dug-out was purchased by Queen Mary. He held several exhibitions in Leicester and exhibited in the Cartwright Hall, Bradford. His series of pen and ink drawings of British Cathedrals was published weekly in the Church Times. Dunford was Senior Art Master at Wyggeston Boys' Grammar School in Leicester from 1921 to 1950, and he was also an Art Master at Harvey's Grammar School in Folkestone. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1939.
