Description

An amusing genre scene depicting a man raising his hands in shock upon being presented with his bill. A label affixed to the reverse attributes the work to a W. Beck, and W. Becken is named on the bill itself. The work is presented in an ornate gilt frame with a title plaque on the lower edge. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Undulation to the canvas, and some small losses to the paint. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, stable cracking, and some losses to the moulding. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
