Collection Information

Violet Hilda Drummond (1911-2000) was born in in London. Her father fought with The Scots Guards in First World War and was killed in Ypres in 1914. Drummond went on to live with her mother and two sisters in a London townhouse. When her governess left she went to a small private boarding school in Eastbourne, and later to a finishing school in Paris, Le Chateau Vitry - Sur - Seine. She was presented at court to Queen Mary. Drummond lived in India and studied briefly at St Martin's School of art. She started to write and illustrate children’s books after marrying, when she returned to live in London. She became head of V. H. Drummond Productions Ltd., which produced a series of cartoons for the BBC. She was awarded the Kate Greenway Medal of Library Association for her work in 'Mrs Easter and the Stork', published by Faber & Faber, London, 1957. Later she wrote 'I got tired of writing children's books so I took up painting watercolour pictures of London street scenes' which she exhibited in a London gallery. From an album of work by Drummond. Most paintings are signed and nearly all are inscribed on the backing sheet. One is dated 1934.
