Born in Bromley, Kent, New was a draughtsman, printmaker and painter best known for his topographical views of Kent. After spending part of his youth in Australia, he returned to England to study art full-time at Bromley and Beckenham Schools of Art between 1925 and 1929, where his teachers included Herbert Ashwin Budd and Rowland Gill. He later continued his studies at Camberwell School of Art in 1931. New worked as a freelance artist for several Kent newspapers before joining the Admiralty’s Naval Intelligence Division as an illustrator, a role he held from 1943 to 1967. During the Second World War he contributed to the planning of the 1944 Normandy invasion. Elected a member of the Art Workers’ Guild in 1938, New regularly exhibited in Kent and Surrey, with solo exhibitions in Belfast in 1927 and Otford in 1989. He lived for many years in Brasted, Kent, where the surrounding landscape became a central subject of his work.
