A vibrant and captivating watercolour painting by the British artist Victor Coverley-Price. The scene depicts a town market scene with figures strolling along. Signed and dated to the lower left-hand corner. There is a newspaper cut-out attached to the reverse inscribed with some of the artist's biographical details. Well-presented in a washline card mount and in a wooden frame with a gilt inner detail, as shown. On watercolour paper.

Painting in fine condition. Some trapped dirt and marks to the mount. Small scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

Victor Coverley-Price (1901-1988) was a painter and writer nee Arthur Victor Price who was, for about 20 years from 1925, a professional diplomat. Born in Winchester, Hampshire and educated at Harrow, he studied languages at Cambridge University. The name Coverley is not present on any of his birth records and may have been an affectation added by him some years later. Price made several study visits to Germany where he developed his love of art by sketching and by visiting galleries and museums. In 1946, he retired from the Diplomatic Service to concentrate on painting and writing. He exhibited in 16 solo exhibitions in various parts of the world including London, Ottawa and Mexico City. The Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, United Society of Artists, Fine Art Society, Foyles Art Gallery and Alpine Club all showed his work. He also wrote and illustrated articles for Sphere magazine, producing over 600 monochrome drawings for the publication. This led him to illustrate four books for children, all set in the Amazonian countryside. He died in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.
