A fine early 20th century restrike mezzotint by Valentine Green (1739-1813) after a painting by Lemuel Francis Abbott depicting two gentlemen playing golf. This image was one of the first golf portraits ever published, and the Blackheath golf course depicted in the print was a primitive five-to-seven-hole course. The subject of the painting is William Innes, a member of the Royal Blackheath Golfers.
Signed in the plate and inscribed with the title 'To the Society of Goffers at Blackheath' to the lower edge. Originally published in 1791 by the engraver.
On paper.In very good condition overall, with a bright crisp image and good colour. Some small marks to the margin, with a puncture to the lower right near the edge, not affecting the plate image. Some light discolouration to the very edges of the paper.
