Utagawa Yoshitaki (1841-1899) was a prominent Japanese ukiyo-e artist active in both Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and Osaka. In addition to his woodblock prints, he worked as a painter and newspaper illustrator. The son of a paste merchant, Yoshitaki trained under Utagawa Yoshiume (1819–1879). From the 1860s through the 1880s, he emerged as the most prolific print designer in Osaka, creating over 1,200 works, most of which depicted kabuki actors.
