Utagawa Yoshiharu (1828-1888) was a ukiyo-e artist and student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi. He was born in Honjo, Edo (present-day Tokyo), the third son of a samurai family. In his youth, Yoshiharu showed interest in kabuki theatre and aspired to become an actor, but turned to art after facing opposition from his family. His work spans a wide range of subjects, from musha-e (warrior prints) and bijin-ga (beautiful women) to scenes of modern life and circus performers.
