An unusually coloured woodcut using nine colours as opposed to the more common three. The scene shows a smiling Onna-Bugeisha (A class of highly skilled and beautiful female warriors who were accomplished in many areas of combat, particularly kenjutsu). She is wearing beautiful patterned kimono and obi and she is surrounded flowers and a fence. The glimpse of another patterned kimono on the left hand side and a section of some sort of cage on the right suggests that this print is the middle section of a larger triptych.
The artist's signature can be seen in the lower right quadrant complete with the red jewel seal circle. The print has been presented in a complimentary green card mount.
On washi.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are small perforations down the right hand side where it would have been bound into a book. There is a tiny hole in the centre of the print.

Utagawa Kunisada (Japanese: 歌川 国貞; 1786 – 12 January 1865), also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代 歌川 豊国 Sandai Utagawa Toyokuni), was the most popular, prolific and commercially successful designer of ukiyo-e woodblock prints in 19th-century Japan. In his own time, his reputation far exceeded that of his contemporaries, Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi.
