Utagawa Toyokuni III - Late 19th Century Japanese Woodblock Flirtatious Moment
Description
A fine ukiyo-e woodblock print by the renowned artist Utagawa Toyokuni III (1786-1865). This joyful scene shows an oiran (similar to a geisha, however these courtesans had little artistic talent in comparison to geisha and sold sexual favors, unlike the geisha. They also dressed in a much more flamboyant and lurid manner.) passing by a resting samurai. The two are exchanging a flirtatious smile. The geisha is carrying a cricket cage (crickets were carried around as pets and signs of immense good luck).
The print is completed with the traditional kanji inscriptions including the artist's signature in the red tablet with white cloud on top at the bottom left of each side of the diptych.. The picture is presented in a thing, un-glazed, black frame.
On washi.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a line down the middle of the print where the diptych has been joined together. There is some light burn to the very edges.
