An incredibly dynamic and narrative Ukiyo-e woodblock in the traditional palette of rust red, black and blue. The triptych is a panel from the story of Prince Genji (the central figure) who was a promiscuous person of stature who had affairs with many women in his court. This scene shows Genji, surrounded by eager women, while he chooses to survey the beauty of the cherry blossom. The first strike was printed in 1861; the colours of this version date this to be later in the 19th Century, after Kunisada's death. The triptych is presented in an off white card mount. On washi.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age. There is some wrinkling to the substrate in the lower right corner and a watermark around the left, lower and right edge, probably from the glue used to adhere the paper to the mount.
