Tom Gower (b.1938) - Signed Original 20th Century Oil. Signed lower right. Signed. On canvas on stretchers. In fine condition. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.Born in Yorkshire in 1938, in the busy city of Leeds. Tom quickly became interested in the sea and boats, which led him to build several boats himself, which he sailed at every opportunity. His love of nautical things soon found him transferring his boating experiences onto canvas, and he eventually took the ultimate step of becoming a professional marine artist. Tom's love for the sea is apparent in his paintings. His use of light and shade and strong bold colours, highlighted by their warmth, capture the mood of all the different aspects of Cornwall.
His early visits to the town of St. Ives, which is renowned for it's quality of light, it's harbour and it's old world charm, made a lasting impression on him, and he vowed that he would make St. Ives his home. Tom and his family moved down to St. Ives in the 1970's.
Tom is now also a professional aviation artist, and has painted many different detailed pictures of a variety of warplanes, including Lancasters, Spitfires and Vulcans.
As well as this, Tom has turned his hand to many subjects including flowers, swans, sea gulls, clowns and much more. For more information please click here.
