This charming mid 19th century study depicts a man and his dog looking across a mountainous landscape. The artist has captured the scene in fine watercolour detail highlighting the various textures in the rural terrain. Signed with a monogram and dated to the lower right. Presented in a 19th century gilt frame with a foliate running palette and gold card slip. On paper.

Artist Biography

Thomas Sewell Robins was a British maritime painter born in Devonport, Devon. He joined the RA school in 1829 with the recommendation of James Northcote, who was a former pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds.

During his career he specialized in maritime subjects, painting mainly in watercolours and occasionally oils. Many of his works were inspired by is extensive travels. He exhibited with the Royal Academy, The British Institute, Suffolk Street Galleries and the New Watercolour Society. One of his most notorious pieces of the HMS Assistance is in the National Maritime Museum.
