A charming watercolour scene depicting a street scene in Nuremberg, Germany. Figures and animals are shown before a beautiful staircase in the city centre. Signed and dated to the lower right. Presented in a gilt frame. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some light scuffing to the frame.

Artist Biography

Thomas Robert Macquoid was a painter born in Chelsea, London. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools from 1839 to 1842. Although he was elected an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 1849, he did not pursue a career in that field but worked as a painter and architectural illustrator. He was employed as a staff illustrator by The Graphic and Illustrated London News and also drew for the Architectural Review, Pall Mall Magazine, The English Illustrated Magazine, and The Churchman's Friendly Magazine and illustrated numerous travel books.

Macquoid exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Dudley Gallery, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. He was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1882, and of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters the following year. He died at Tooting Common, then in Surrey and a memorial exhibition of his work was held at the New Dudley Gallery in London in 1912. His son was the artist Percy Thomas Macquoid.
