Collection Information
From the Scrapbook of Helen Mary Fox (1838-1928). Helen, known as Ella, had houses in Saltwell (Newcastle upon Tyne) and Pendower Cornwall. Her family was landed gentry. Many of the items in the scrapbook were produced by family members, some of whom were quite talented. But the album was kept going into the early 20th century. It is obvious that Ella was keen on the album, and as their circle of friends was affluent, some of the gifts she was given for her album were purchased from professional artists. It is often difficult to tell if the donor of an item is the artist or if was purchased.
Almost everything in the album is inscribed with the name of the donor of the item and it reads as a list of the area’s gentry circa 1880. John William Pease (1836–1901) married Helen Mary Fox (1838–1928) (daughter of Alfred Fox of the Fox family of Falmouth who created Glendurgan Garden). With his brother-in-law Thomas Hodgkin founded the Newcastle bank of Hodgkin, Barnett, Pease, Spence & Co that became part of Lloyds Bank in 1902.
