The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, particularly towards the top of the picture. Some very minor surface dirt underneath the glass. Generally in good condition.

Thomas Eyre Macklin was a painter, illustrator and sculptor, born in Newcastle upon Tyne to a local landscape painter Lieutenant John Macklin. Thomas studied at Newcastle School of Art and in 1884 he went to London where he drew from the antique at the British Museum and studied at the Calderon School of Animal Painting in London and, from 1887, the RA Schools.
On his return to the North East in 1893 he worked as an illustrator and landscape artist, exhibiting at the Bewick Club, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, RA, RSA and RBA of which he was elected a member in 1902. Subsequently he enjoyed success primarily as a portrait painter and illustrator, with studios in London and Newcastle. His public work includes the war memorial for the South African fallen soldiers located in central Newcastle upon Tyne and the Maori War Memorial in Auckland, New Zealand.
Examples of his work are in the collections of Ulster Museum and Art Gallery, the Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead and Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne.
