Description

An engraving by Thomas Cook (c.1744-1818) after William Hogarth (1697-1764) titled 'Burning the Rumps at Temple Bar', Plate 11 from the series 'Hudibras' (1726) which illustrated Samuel Butler's (1613-1680) mock-heroic narrative poem of the same name. Inscribed with stanzas from the poem, the title, names of the artists, publication information, and date 1801 in plate to the lower edge. On wove.

Condition

Cropped outside the plate lines. There is foxing, discolouration, and some water stains to the substrate. There is a centrefold crease and several closed tears around the edges, the largest of which is at the lower-right edge and measures 4cm but does not encroach on the engraving itself.
