Theodore I. Dalgleish (1855-1941) - Late 19th Century Etching A Leisurely Row

Description

A highly accomplished etching showing a woman rowing down a river towards a watermill. Two men stand at the jetty on the bank. A quaint town can be seen behind the mill. The artist has beautifully rendered the reflections in the lake and the gathering dusk in the sky to the top left. The artist has signed in pencil to the lower left corner and the printer has inscribed to the lower right of the plate. On chin-collé.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The original plate lines are still in tact. There is a crease to the top left edge. There is a crease to the left of the centre of the image and a small white mark in the top right quadrant.

Artist Biography

Theodore Irving Dalgliesh was a landscape artist who made is chief suffess as an etcher but who also painted in oils and watercolors. Born at Coventry on February 1, 1855, he became a pupil of Alphonse Legros about 1876, and began to exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1876. He was one of those active in the revival of English etching.
