A solitary nude bather stands in the shallows of a quiet river beneath a towering gorge topped with autumnal trees in this striking work by German artist Theodor Schnitzer (1869–1939). The vertical format, coupled with the intense, enveloping darkness of the far bank, serves to emphasise a feeling of quiet solitude and mystery. The work is signed and dated to the lower left, and is well presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including some light discolouration and minor abrasions to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Light wear to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
