The Works of Charles Dickens, 19 volumes, part of a larger set. 8vo (8 3/4" x 6"). With hundreds of illustrations by Marcus Stone, John Leech, George Cruikshank et al. Some are variously dated 1865, 1874, 1875, and have likely been uniformly rebound in the 19th Century. The titles are as follows: Bleak House, Great Expectations, David Copperfield, Our Mutual Friend, Uncommercial Traveller, Barnaby Rudge, The Pickwick Papers, Little Dorrit, Martin Cruzzlewit, Oliver Twist & A Tale of Two Cities, Dombey and Son, Edwin Drood, Christmas Books, Old Curiosity Shop, Hard Times, American Notes, Sketches by Boz, Nicholas Nickleby and Christmas Stories.
The volumes are presented in half Morocco leather bindings with cloth boards, gilt lettering and spine details with five raised bands, marbled endpapers and edges. Published London: Chapman and Hall, 193 Piccadilly. Printed by Virtue & Co., Limited, City Road, and some printed by Bradbury, Agnew & Co, Whitefriars.
Condition
A good set overall, with tight bindings and generally intact boards. Some joints cracked, with scuffing and surface scrapes to many volumes, including losses to leather boards and spines. Some damage to cloth. Wear to spines but nearly all lettering clear and bright. Interiors are good, with some foxing and light discolouration, mainly to the first few pages of each volume.
