The Franquet Portraits

A collection of twelve splendid portraits depicting several generations of the Franquet family, a family of Austrian origin based in Brunswick or 'Braunschweig', Lower Saxony, Germany, during the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Franquet Portraits

These works likely date to around 1885 and some appear to be copies of larger portraits by Johann Heinrich Schröder (1784-1883). We believe the set may have been intended to display as a group when the larger works were either in different branches of the family or were unable to be passed down as a group and displayed together; however, the artist (or artists) are unknown.

Nevertheless, these remain a charming set of characters, with many having extremely fine and delicately stippled faces demonstrating an accomplished hand. Each portrait is framed in matching antique gilt frames with running laurel and berry mouldings, and many have handwritten ink inscriptions to the reverse.
