A charming oil painting by the artist Terry Shelbourne, depicting his beloved wife Celia. Signed and dated to the lower right-hand corner. The inscription on the reverse reads: 'The Love of my Life. Darling little C'. Presented in a contemporary, ornate gilt effect frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

In fine condition overall. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Minor scuffs and small areas of paint loss to the frame.

Artist Biography

Terry Shelbourne (1930-2020) was a locally renowned and respected artist and cartoonist, especially within his home town of Grantham. Shelbourne studied at the St. Anne's School, and later at the Boys Central. It was here that he decided to attend the Nottingham College of Arts & Crafts.

After his studies, Shelbourne began his career as a cartoonist for the magazine Mag-o-Marc for BMARC (British Marco Ltd.). After serving the RAF, he returned to Grantham and started working with John Coxworth on Watergate, painting humorous pub signs. In the late 1980’s, the artist began his segment in the Grantham Journal creating cartoons of local people for well over 30 years. An example of his work can be seen at the Lincolnshire County Council Grantham Collection.
