Artist Biography
Son of artists Cyrus and Nell Cuneo. Born in London he studied art at the Chelsea School of Art, 1924-27 and at the Slade School and exhibited widely. Cuneo lived in St. Ives, Cornwall with his mother during the 1920’s and was an exhibiting member with the STISA. As well as designing posters for the LNER, LMS and British Railways, he painted portraits, including British royalty and ceremonial, military and railway subjects and was also a member of the London Sketch Club. During World War II he worked for the War Artists Advisory Committee as an Official War Artist, providing illustrations of aircraft factories and wartime events. He was appointed as the Official Artist for painting the coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. He was the first President of the Society of Equestrian Artists, President of the Industrial Painters Group and was also a member of the Guild of Aviation Artists but as far as I can ascertain he was never a member of the Guild of Railway Artists. This is something of a mystery as many of Cuneo's greatest paintings depicted the age of the steam engine. Cuneo was appointed OBE in 1987 and CVO in 1994.
Examples of his work can be found in the collections of Aberdeen Art Gallery, Atkinson Art Gallery, British Postal Museum, Doncaster Art Gallery, Glasgow Museums, Guildhall Art Gallery, Herbert Art Gallery, HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, HM Queen Elizabeth, IWM, National Motor Museum, National Museums Liverpool, NMW, NRM, RAF Museum, Hendon, Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum and in the collections of numerous army and regimental museums. Cuneo was given a retrospective exhibition at the Mall Galleries, London in 1988 with a second held at the NRM in 1997
