A meticulous ornithological study of a tawny owl in gouache, by the well-known British artist and illustrator Terance James Bond (b. 1946). This masterly study by Bond demonstrates his technique well, using thousands of fine individual brush strokes to build depth and perspective. The tawny owl is perched on a fence post, with its head turned to the right, displaying its eyes, talons and anatomically accurate plumage.
Entitled 'Study of a Tawny Owl' and handsomely presented in a wide grey double card mount with gilt frame, as can be seen in the images provided. Inscription on the reverse details provenance from the artists studio, reading 'Terance James Bond, illustrator and artist of natural history. Little Paddock, Kersey, Ipswich'.
Signed and incsribed on the reverse. On wove.In fine condition overall, with some small white marks to the mount and scuffing to the frame.

Terance James Bond (b.1946) held his first solo exhibition of wildlife subjects at The Haste Gallery in Ipswich in 1970. Since then, he has exhibited with the RSPB in London, produced images for Wedgewood China, and held a further 21 shows, as well as producing numerous illustrations for publishers both in the UK and the USA. His paintings begin with detailed pencil drawings on board with gesso, and gradually he builds layers of background detail before finally tackling the principle bird subject with thousands of fine sable brush strokes. He often begins at the tail and works up to the head of the bird, with the eye becoming the last painted element.
Other ornithological paintings by Bond have previously sold at Christie's and Sotheby's in London, as well as internationally.
