A very fine and delicately composed still life arrangement by the listed artist Sydney Graham Briault (1887-1955), depicting a jug with branches of yellow flowers in an interior. Painted in the last year of his life, this work demonstrates significant artistic ability, and Briault achieves a perfect balance between detail and impressionistic brushwork. Delicate and gentle, the overall composition is aided by subtle lighting and dynamic shadowing. Well-presented in a distressed gilt effect wooden frame, as shown. Signed and dated. On board.Condition
In very good condition overall. There is some minor surface dirt and a small mark near the right edge. The frame has some minor scuffing, in keeping with the distressed surface look.

Artist Biography
Sydney Graham Briault (1887-1955) was a painter, commercial artist and illustrator, born in Hackney, London. He initially studied art at evening classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic School of Art, and at St. Martin's School of Art. He did a large amount of commercial work: book jackets and illustrations and drawings for Strand Magazine and Windsor Magazine. During World War II he was for several years studio manager with a leading London advertising agency. There is only a single record of his exhibiting at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1918. A member of Croydon Art Society, he lived at Shirley, Croydon where he died in a local hospital.
