Artist Biography
Sydney Curnow Vosper was a painter and printmaker of landscapes and figures who was born in Stonehouse, Plymouth the son of a brewer and wine merchant. His first employment was as an apprentice to a local architect which lasted three years until he started work as a freelance illustrator in London. He then decided to further his art experience and spent three years at the Académie Julian in Paris studying under William-Adolphe Bouguereau, (1825-1905) and Raphael Collin, (1850-1916). His preferred subjects were views in Wales and in Brittany.
Vosper was elected an Associate of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1905 and a member in 1914. He also showed at the Paris Salon, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Chenil Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour and Walker's Gallery. He was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club from 1908 until his demise and he died on 10 July 1942 at the Teign House Hotel, Shaldon, Devon.
Examples of his work are in the collections of the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum and the Royal Watercolour Society, Merthyr Tydfil Museum & Art Gallery, National Museum of Wales, Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter and the Lady Lever Art Gallery.
