A fine and much accomplished copy of the original 1888 painting by the Newlyn School genre painter, Frank Bramley RA (1857–1915). The title of this painting comes from a passage by John Ruskin, which affirms that Christ is at the helm of every boat. The kneeling woman, comforted by her mother-in-law, realises that her husband is lost at sea, but the open Bible, altar-like table and print on the wall hint at the consolations of religion.
The artist has signed and dated to the lower left corner and the painting has been presented in a contemporary brown Hogarth style frame. The frame is finished with an attractive wash-line mount and glazing.
