Sophie Atkinson (1876-1972), born Sophia Mildred Atkinson in Newcastle upon Tyne, was an English watercolour landscape painter and illustrator. She was the daughter of artist Matthew Hutton Atkinson (1843-1917) and the granddaughter of artists George Clayton Atkinson (1808-1870) and William Adamson (1818-92). She studied art at Armstrong College, Newcastle, under Richard George Hatton and later at Bushey Art School. She lived in Newcastle for some years painting local landscapes and gardens and at the end of World War I visited India and Austria before emigrating to Canada. There she painted many Rocky Mountain and Western Seaboard subjects before eventually returning to Britain in 1967 and settling in Edinburgh. Atkinson showed at the RI and at the Laing Art Gallery.
